Wild Pink explores new ground leading to the Big Room show

In a September 2021 interview with AliveJohn Ross of Wild Pink described the massive sound captured on A billion little lightsreleased a month ago as the culmination of years of building something epic.

“It was the last leg of this journey, of this trajectory. I definitely feel like it’s our biggest record, but I also feel like I put a full stop at the end of that sentence,” said Ross, who was inspired to A billion little lights from sources that included Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos” and a move from the city to upstate New York, where the night sky left him feeling dwarfed every time he looked up. “I just finished writing a new record…and I think it’s going to sound quite different.”

New song “Q. Degraw,” released last week and which you can listen to below, sticks to that prediction, with Ross and Co. forgoing their past celestial shimmer in favor of a darker, more earthy, colored by distorted guitars and obscured vocals that sound as if they emanate from a deep abyss.

“This song is about my experiences with certain health issues and how an extremely stressful situation can help you focus on what’s important in life,” Ross wrote in a press release. “It’s also about how that stress can sometimes cause you to dissociate from yourself.”

Expect Wild Pink to traverse both these newer underground lands and the heavenly vistas of past records when the band travel to Columbus for a show at The Big Room Bar on Friday, April 22.
