On January 1, 2022, the Tweed & Company Theater took over the operation of two theaters in Hastings County. The professional theater company took possession of the Marble Arts Center (MAC) in Tweed and signed a multi-year lease for the Bancroft Village Playhouse; both agreements were finalized in December.
Tweed & Co. received ownership of MAC – located in Actinolite, north of Tweed – from the Tweed & Area Arts Council. The theater company had rented the hall for its professional productions since 2010 and established a strong relationship with the Arts Council during this time. Operating the venue throughout the Covid-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, leading the Arts Council’s board of directors to consider a change in ownership. Although it is withdrawing from theaters, the Arts Council will continue to actively participate in the future of the MAC.
Vicki McCulloch, President of T & AAC, said the “MAC will always be ‘our home’ in many ways, and the Arts Council will continue to present programming there. Tweed & Co. have the capacity, expertise and a proven track record, continuing to grow as an artistic and cultural presence in the region. We look forward to continuing to work with them now and in the future.
At Bancroft, Tweed & Co. was selected from a pool of applicants who submitted proposals to operate the Bancroft Village Playhouse. The Playhouse is owned by St. Paul’s United Church in Bancroft and was previously operated by Hospice North Hastings. The hospice, similar to the T & AAC, faced new operational challenges brought on by the pandemic and ultimately decided to step down from its role. Tweed & Co. took the tour of their nearly sold out production of Hastings the Musical to the Playhouse in 2018 and were eager to explore the possibilities of this venue.
“Tweed & Co.’s long-term goals have included operating multiple sites in Eastern Ontario for years,” said Managing Director Emily Mewett. “We have seen exponential growth over the past few years, including the addition of two invaluable members to our administrative team and the ability to provide work for artists throughout the pandemic. Adding to this list the operation of two sites is an absolute dream; an event that would not have happened without the tremendous support we have received along the way. “
Tweed & Company Theater is a non-profit charitable organization operated by Tim

We are on the right track to achieve this. a reality!”
Tweed & Co. will present a full season of professional musical theater at both venues, as well as youth training programs that will include March vacation and summer camp programs, and the youth opportunity for Tweed and of Bancroft to work with professional artists, directors and choreographers. The Company continues its efforts to make both buildings fully accessible to customers, staff and artists. Both rooms will be available for rental, one night only presentations, special events and more.
Tweed & Co. is also encouraging local artists, creators and performers to join its mailing list and follow the company on social media to find out more about upcoming open days and opportunities to connect with the artistic team on proposals (artistic performances and others) for the places. “We are incredibly excited for the future of these two sites, these communities and our entire region,” said artistic director Tim Porter. “We have long envisioned the possibilities that lie ahead here in Hastings County, and we look forward to bringing full seasons to these breathtaking locations and continuing on our journey to make this region the next Stratford or Shaw. is promising here in Hastings … stay tuned. “
