Disney’s latest animated film Le Petit Mermaid was hit in 1989, and it was considered one of the studio’s most iconic movies, for that credit goes to some relatable characters and iconic villains, and it had music that stood out at the time of the test.
Disney aims to regenerate that magic with this live-action adaptation set to hit in 2023 with Halle Bailey playing some of the key characters. We got our first look at the highly anticipated trailer.
The latest trailer provided a first look at Bailey’s ariel as the film’s mermaid princess was mesmerized by these human worlds. The role was voiced primarily by Jodi Benson in the 1989 film. In the new trailer, we saw Bailey sing the most iconic song “Part of Your World” and add her own personal touch to it. We haven’t seen much of the film in its aquatic world, things look like a true echo of that animated film energy.
Disney’s new live-action remake is largely very faithful to those animated counterparts that set precedents for the expectations of those in the latest adaptation.
The new trailer gives some hints that Disney is putting a contemporary spin on the classic tale to make the movie more appealing to modern audiences. The film contains new musical numbers.
Besides Bailey, The Little Mermaid also featured Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, the love interest of Ariel’s father, Jude Akuwudike as King Triton who is Prince Eric’s trusted butler, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula as a sea witch who tricked Ariel and the film’s villain. Now Lorena Andrea and Kajsa Mohammar hold part of the cast as Perla and Karina respectively.
Additionally, we’ll see Daveed Diggs voice the crab Sebastian, Jacob Tremblant voiced by Flounder, and Awkwafina voiced by Scuttle. There is also Simone Ashley, Jessica Alexander, Noma Sumezwani, Russell Balogh, Emily Coates and Adrian Christopher.
The animated adaptation was directed by Rob Marshall to direct Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns, Into the Woods, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Now the original had been directed by John Musker and Ron Clements.
The script was written with these live-action adaptations intended to collaborate with Magee and Marshall who previously worked on Mary Poppins Returns.
