The Graduate Singers – known to their audiences as the Grads – are thrilled to present In Good Company, their first concert of the 2022 season.
Grads has always prided himself on his versatility and having shared the stage with the full power of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in three recent massive performances – Carmina Burana at the November 2021 Orchestra Festival, Nativity commissioned by the ASO to Richard Mills and performed in December 2021, and Prayer for the Living at the Adelaide Festival 2022 – the choir returns on a more intimate scale for In Good Company. A selection of largely unaccompanied works feature some of the choir’s favorite repertoire, including Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre, settings of Ubi caritas by Maurice Duruflé and Ola Gjeilo, and the haunting My Love is Always Here by Alexandre Desplat. It’s no surprise that a concert of favorites finds renewed depth and beauty in the familiar, with folk songs making their way through the program, including David Overton’s singsong arrangement of Loch Lomond and a tender setting and moving from The Parting Glass by Carl Crossin OAM, Patron of Singers graduate. Grads maintains its commitment to performing the music of Australian composers with works by Joseph Twist and Ben van Tienen taking pride of place, as well as highlighting female composers with an excerpt from Canadian composer Eleanor Daley’s lush and soothing requiem.
The choir also finds itself in good company with renowned concert pianist Michael Ierace, who has collaborated with Grads on several occasions over the years and joins them again to accompany works by van Tienen, Gjeilo, Samuel Barber and Morten Lauridsen.
“We invite you to join us for this concert – a chance to really play together ‘as graduates’ after a very long time – for an evening of music, camaraderie, beauty and the joy of singing together,” says Geiger . “We are always delighted to perform in the beautiful acoustics of Elder Hall, one of our favorite venues in Adelaide, and we look forward to bringing this music to an audience and sharing our selections with you.
