Sonic Producer Breaks Down Hedgehog Redesign After Trailer Backlash

Sonic the Hedgehog movie producer Neal Moritz breaks down Paramount’s decision to delay the first movie and redesign Sonic after the trailer backlash.

The producer of sonic the hedgehog movies, Neal Moritz, breaks down the decision to redesign Sonic following the overwhelmingly negative response to the first movie’s initial trailer. The backlash from the trailer was so intense that Paramount agreed to delay the film for several months to resolve the issue and satisfy fans. Director Jeff Fowler pushed his entire VFX team to redesign the character to be more like his video game appearance.

Neither sonic the hedgehog the films got stellar scores from critics – the first film has a score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Sonic 2 seat at 66%. I remember it like it was yesterday…Here’s what we learned: we learned that we had more points of view and more interest in something that we never thought could exist. The problem was… all the answers were negative about the character. But, we were like, ‘Holy shit, people love it and are really… If we can turn this ship around, we already know we have a huge interest.’ So we had a bridge meeting the next morning in one of Paramount’s boardrooms…and we said, ‘We’re going to bring the character back to what he loves, and we need x-amount dollars to do it, and we have to delay the film.’ And I have to say that SEGA and Paramount said, “Okay, you’re right…” And we just decided that we were going to do it right… [W]We ultimately didn’t want to let down the fans, Paramount down, or SEGA down, who had given us their crown jewel to go and make a movie out of it… We put everything in it to make it good, and we listened .

Paramount’s quick response to the fan outcry, along with its poster campaign mimicking the covers of early Sonic games, shows the studio’s real willingness to listen and respond to viewer criticism. It’s something that many other studios, when adapting video games, can’t seem to grasp. Although it did well at the box office, a recent adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Unexplored received intense criticism from the game’s fans for casting a young Nathan Drake and for its deviation from the source material. However, Paramount’s dedication to Sonic’s die-hard fan base is impressive, and other studios should aspire to it.

Sonic’s new design was embraced by fans, so ultimately Moritz, Fowler, and Paramount made the right decision adjusting the design. With Sonic 2 now feasting at the box office, sonic the hedgehog 3 has already been officially greenlit, with a spin-off for Idris Elba’s Knuckles. In other words, the future of Sonic the films, thanks to Paramount’s commitment to the fan base, are sure to be brilliant.
