Restless music college staff seek arrears, continued service

Temporary non-teaching staff at Dr. Gangubai Hangal University of Music and Performing Arts in Karnataka State, who have been on strike for over a month, have alleged non-payment of wages for 11 months.

The association of non-teaching staff of the university submitted a memorandum to the elected officials and also asked for the regularization of their service.

Members of the association said they had been in office for eight to ten years and that non-payment of salaries had put them in serious financial difficulty.

Some of the employees who went to court to obtain compensation were allegedly harassed by the university authorities, according to the association, which indicated that in their absence the administrative work was carried out by temporary workers and the described as unauthorized.

The association also alleged that they were prevented from carrying out the functions they had performed for eight to ten years and that the university authorities were now seeking to recruit staff.

The memorandum submitted to MLA Nagendra and Mysuru MP Pratap Simha demanded immediate payment of pending salaries and continuation of their services to the university.
