RANDOM ACTS opens February 17 at the 4th Wall Theater Company

The 4th Wall Theater Company, Houston’s home for extraordinary up-close performances, is proud to present RANDOM ACTS, an earth-shattering play from the civil rights era, written and performed by Renata Hinrichs and directed by Jessi D. Hill . In this deeply moving play, Ms. Hinrichs revisits moments of her youth as the child of a frontline minister of the civil rights movement on the South Side of Chicago.

From witnessing the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, to dancing with Julie Andrews, to receiving an unexpected message of reconciliation, Ms Hinrichs reveals how events of the past have shaped her mind and asks if an act of brutality random can be transformed by a random act of courage and grace. Somewhere in Transition found this play to be “touching, funny and more relevant by the minute” and Indie Theater Now calls RANDOM ACTS “A gripping story that made this reviewer cry for the last 15 minutes”.

4th Wall first presented this 80-minute tour de force to audiences in Houston in 2021 as a streaming production. “We are delighted to be able to bring this play to life in the way it was always meant to be seen – live and in person!” remarks artistic director Philip Lehl. “Ms. Hinrichs’ experiences provide a genuine way for all of us to reconnect with an important moment in our country’s history.”

Ms. Hinrichs found inspiration for RANDOM ACTS while living in New York City during the September 11 terrorist attacks. “The sirens and searchlights that went off near St. Vincent Hospital are reminiscent of the chaos, confusion and terror I experienced as a child amid the civil rights struggle in South Chicago over the years. 1960 “, she recalls. Designers Dan Jones (lighting), Joe Engler (projections) and Yezminne Zepeda (sound) bring these experiences to life for audiences in Houston.
