New student-run theater company arrives at Queen’s

In 2021, Queen’s formed the student-run theater company The Dan Exposition Series (DES), supported by the Dan School of Drama and Music.

Serena Ferzli, ArtSci ’22 and Creative Director of DES, spoke with The newspaper on the creation of an accessible theatrical space.

“I was trying to find a middle ground that would give more opportunities to the musical side of the [Dan School of Drama & Music], especially the voice domain,” Ferzli said.

She emphasized that fair hiring was a priority in the creation of DES.

“I really wanted to create a space that would be accessible,” Ferzli said. “I’ve moved forward with Dan Expo in the fairest way possible – using job descriptions, having a plan – so that everyone feels like they have a chance because it’s about ‘a company without experience.’

Ferzli wants to respond to diversity and create a comfortable environment for people from marginalized groups.

“I want things to be more diverse,” Ferzli said. “I really hope to create this environment where everyone feels welcome and everyone feels like they can participate in creating something new.”

DES differs from other student-run companies in that their shows combine multiple genres and performance styles. Ferzli referred to their style as “incidental music” – comprising selected operatic pieces, original and pre-written musical theatre, and group music.

This wide variety allows Ferzli to realize his desire to support all kinds of art.

“One motto that I’ve tried to plug into is this idea of supporting student initiatives,” she said. “Being creative with students and for students and reinventing what it means to live music.”

Ferzli wants to open the eyes of the Queen’s community, particularly by challenging preconceptions about musicals and what they represent.

“If someone, say from Commerce, comes to watch our show [who] never heard opera before but they are coming because their friend wrote a musical they have the chance to dip their toes into a different musical and artistic realm that they never have [experienced] before.”

Attend the DES show dates March 15-19.
