Musical Stage Company Announces Citywide Musical Revival for Summer 2022

In 2021, The Musical Stage Company celebrated an extraordinary summer, bringing live musical experiences to over 6,000 Torontonians: the company presented BLACKOUT, an incredible new Canadian musical under the stars in the glorious High Park Amphitheatre; they produced another sold-out series of traveling cabaret concerts PORCHSIDE SONGS; and launched MUSICAL MOMENTS, bringing free street parties, jam sessions and surprise performances to every corner of the city.

The company is now thrilled to announce that in 2022 it will do it again and MORE, presenting a city-wide celebration of musical storytelling offering four weeks of wildly joyful musical programming across the GTA – featuring MARQUEE.

Lighting up parks, porches, streets and traditional theater halls, MARQUEE will unleash a wave of musical experiences across Toronto. Large-scale productions, star-studded concerts, community performances and participatory pop-ups will invigorate the city and reconnect communities, reminding us all why it’s better with music.

From May 28 to June 25, MARQUEE’s multifaceted and electrifying slate of programs explores the central theme of “Turning Points”, inviting Toronto’s most imaginative artists to tap into personal moments of fundamental change.

“The inevitability of change in our lives is a universal and recurring theme,” comments Ray Hogg, artistic director of Musical Stage Company. “We all come up against, at one point or another, a moment or moments of radical change that forces us to fundamentally change who we are. These cathartic changes are so profound that they can seem revolutionary to us. The heart our very being is transforming – we are undergoing a revolution of being.All of our programming this year will highlight the deeply personal, sometimes autobiographical, discoveries that our artists have made as a result of their own personal revolutions.


June 1-19 at the High Park Amphitheater

The anchor of this thrilling summer program is a new Canadian musical from one of today’s most innovative and inspiring performing artists, DIXON ROAD. A co-production with regular creative partners Obsidian Theatre, DIXON ROAD has book, music and lyrics by Fatuma Adar and is directed and choreographed by Musical Stage Company Artistic Director Ray Hogg. Telling the story of a Somali family who immigrated to Canada in 1991 as civil war began to tear their homeland apart, DIXON ROAD incorporates contemporary verse, R&B and traditional Somali melodies into an uplifting story about dreams, displacement and the search for a new meaning. of the House. As part of Canadian Stage’s Dream in High Park 2022 lineup, DIXON ROAD will run June 1-19.


From June 23 to 25 at the Winter Garden Theater

Hot on the heels of DIXON ROAD, The Musical Stage Company makes their long-awaited return to the historic Winter Garden Theater, where they staged their multi-Dora award-winning 2020 production of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. An intimate evening of stories and songs from Stephen Sondheim’s musical catalog, Cynthia Dale: TAKE THE MOMENT pays homage to the extraordinary life-changing moments that shape us all. Featuring one of Canada’s most beloved musical performers in an unprecedented raw performance, under the direction of Richard Ouzounian, this special event concert is on stage June 22-25.


June 13 – July 10, Live & in concert in your front yard

Returning for a third year, PORCHSIDE SONGS is The Musical Stage Company’s acclaimed outdoor cabaret series that brings music to GTA audiences, brings music to the streets and brings communities together security. This summer features two dynamic musical duos featuring cabarets exploring the MARQUEE theme of personal transformation. PORCHSIDE SONGS 2022 cabarets are created and performed by Beau Dixon and Kelly Holiff, and Kevin Wong and Cailin Stadnyk, with creative support from Thom Allison. The 2022 cabarets are available from June 13 to July 10.


May 28 – June 10, popping up across the city

Returning for a second year to infuse the city with explosive street parties, interactive jam sessions and surprise performances, MUSICAL MOMENTS brings pop-up experiences to Toronto communities by harnessing the imagination and creativity of artists. Seven MUSICAL MOMENTS experiences by various local artists will be available from May 28 through June 10, exploring themes of grounding, discovering dreams, and building the future. New this year, audiences interested in following the full program can attend a pick-up of MUSICAL MOMENTS High Park on June 11 and 12.

Participating artists this year include BitterJuice Collective, Dillan Chiblow, Sharron Matthews and Jennifer Villaverde. Tickets for all MUSICAL MOMENTS events are free.

RBC and Banks Prize Creators Project

June 14

Rosie Callaghan and Matthew Joseph, winners of The Musical Stage Company’s 2021-22 Syd & Shirley Banks Prize, perform a passionate cabaret performance for the 10th anniversary of the Banks Prize showcase. This cabaret series, created by the eight apprentice artists of Musical Stage in 2022, is a joyous discovery of his personal roots and artistic expression, with extraordinary musical selections and special performances by past winners.

MARQUEE 2022: Participatory experiences

A wide range of ancillary participatory experiences are planned to enrich the extensive MARQUEE 2022 lineup. Prior to each DIXON ROAD performance, The Musical Stage Company will offer audiences the opportunity to experience and immerse themselves in Somali culture and heritage at through food, music, dance, arts and crafts. Pre-show talks with members of The Musical Stage Company and the DIXON ROAD artistic team will also be presented before each performance.


THE MARQUEE FELLOWS is a free performing arts program that aims to enrich the lives of people connected to The Musical Stage Company’s MARQUEE 2022 themes, stories and songs.

Working on the theme of “Turning Points”, The Marquee Fellows offer a community of Torontonians passionate about the arts a chance to connect with the performing arts in new ways. Attendees can expect performing arts workshops, panel discussions, facilitated independent creation time, personal introductions from the cast and/or main production creative team, as well as a opportunity to create and discuss art in an assertive space.


For MARQUEE 2022, The Musical Stage Company offers several accessibility initiatives and offerings to reduce barriers to participation. On-site accessibility initiatives include ASL interpretation, relaxed shows, shuttle services to the High Park Amphitheater and audio-described shows and select MARQUEE programs will provide a digital option for audiences unable to leave their residences.

All MARQUEE shows and programs will have paid ticketing options, as well as fully subsidized ticketing programs offered by community partners, with many MARQUEEs available free to the public.
