Lafayette Theater Company begins preparations for SpongeBob The Musical – The Lancer Feed

Rehearsal for this year’s musical, Spongebob, is already in full swing. Auditions were held Nov. 10 and 11, with rehearsals starting a week before Thanksgiving. The performances will take place at the Lafayette Theater from February 10 to 12 at 7 p.m. and tickets will be available a few days before the performances for $ 8 in advance and $ 10 at the door.

Although the cast list was released on November 11, the role of Sandy Cheeks had to be recast due to a conflict with who was originally chosen, which resulted in a second audition. Zoe Rundquist, who did not initially audition for Spongebob, ended up getting the role.

“I pretty much participated in all the performance based activities in school like Vox Solus, Tuesday Night Rock Band, band, color guard and Winter Guard so I guess the theater was the last thing to check out. the list. I’ve never done a musical before, so I can’t wait to see how it goes, ”said Rundquist.

Initially hesitant to audition, Rundquist’s connection to the musical and the encouragement she received helped her make the decision to give it a try.

“At the beginning, I did not register, it was partly because it was Spongebob. I was one of those kids where my mom would say “if you look at it you’re gonna be stupid”. I don’t even really watch it, so I was kinda drawn to it, but actually my mom knows this professional orchestral violinist and he said he played the pit for Spongebob coincidentally and he was excited about it. That’s when my mom realized maybe this wasn’t a stupid musical that we were doing, ”she said.

Rundquist wasn’t the only student who had a negative first impression. Natasha Fischer, drama teacher and director of the Lafayette Theater Company (LTC), said her students weren’t thrilled at the start of the musical, but now have a different opinion.

“It was not well received, I will say that. A lot of kids were wondering “why are we doing this? And now they’re like ‘okay, this is a really good script.’ It’s a matter of kindness. It is about coming together as a community and doing what is good for all rather than for yourself. It’s actually very relevant, pure, and awesome. It’s a great script, ”said Fischer.

Junior Celeste Viñas will play SpongeBob SquarePants, a role she never expected to get but is proud to have.

“The way the musical has always been done before is with a SpongeBob man, a Patrick man, but it’s different because now it’s a SpongeBob woman and a Patrick woman. Not only that, but all of the stars are people of color except one which is more interesting because she’s more diverse than we’re used to, so that’s kind of cool. I am delighted that they are seeing this and seeing the new side of the story, ”said Viñas.
