Interview: Talking With Nashville Singer-Songwriter Shantaia About “Broke To Brand New”

Country singer-songwriter Shantaia releases his brand new single, “Broke To Brand New”.

Speaking of the track, Shantaia shares, “’Broke to Brand New’ is one of my favorite songs I’ve written so far. The chorus slipped out of me one night after leaving a concert in Nashville. I just sat in my dark living room and wrote it in 2 minutes. The next morning it was so stuck in my head that I sent it to my friends Ryan Sorestad, Brittany Knott and Guy Taylor Nash, and they returned it. A few weeks later we finished the song and listening to the simplified demo that Britt and I created, we all cried and knew we had something special. Since then, it’s evolved into such a fierce anthem of power, and I’m so excited that everyone is finally hearing this jam!

Shantaia will be touring Canada this year, with The Washboard Union as part of the Cavendish Beach Music Festival’s Road Back To Cavendish Tour.

Having amassed over a million streams, Shantaia has shared the stage with Kane Brown, Chris Lane, Ryan Hurd, Emerson Drive and Charlie Major, as well as performances at Nashville’s Whiskey Jam, Listening Room Cafe, Americana Fest at Cavendish Beach Music. Dolphin Festival and Countryfest. Additionally, she won the SCMA Emerging Artist of the Year Award.

CelebMix caught up with Shantaia virtually to find out more about the person behind the music, her early days in music, her influences, and her songwriting process.

What are three things you can’t live without?

It’s so difficult! But right now, I would say my guitar, my Apple Watch, and my makeup.

What inspired your new single, “Broke To Brand New?”

One night at a concert I overheard someone say that this new truck they bought was old and broken, but it was new to them. The title came to mind, and I came home late that night and wrote the chorus in 5 minutes! I sent it to my co-writers and we finished it the following week!

How did you start music?

My parents put me in singing lessons when I was 3 years old, piano at 5 years old and guitar at 6 years old. I owe them everything for having made my debut in music!

Which musicians/singers influenced you the most?

Growing up, Martina McBride was my biggest influence, and currently I look mainly to Maren Morris for musical inspiration! I love his writing and his style!

What inspires your writing? Are you inspired by poems, music, television or other media?

I am mainly inspired by personal experiences, but I also really like to write as if I were an actress in a film. From someone else’s point of view! I definitely pick up lines or ideas when watching TV or movies, which is always a lot of fun!

What can you share about your writing process?

It changes every time; sometimes it starts with a title/hook, or sometimes a melody and the music! I like to write both ways! I often write with the same people because we already have a working bond and it shows in the songs.

You have a unique sound. Did it develop naturally over time, or did you push it in a certain direction?

Thank you! My sound has definitely developed naturally over time! Listen to pop, country, etc. helped me create my own sound!

How do you keep your sound fresh?

Staying true to what I want to create! I think if you try to keep up with what other artists are doing, you’re always going to be late and do something you don’t really want to do!

Which artists do you think are killing it right now?

I’m loving Lauren Weintraub right now! She’s a killer writer with cool, catchy melodies! I’m also so excited for Tenille Arts and can’t wait to see what she does this year!

What can your fans expect in 2022?

Lots of new music!! I can’t wait for all the singles to come out, along with music videos, show announcements and more! Let’s make 2022 the best yet!
