Three students from South Florida College received Fulbright awards for the 2021-2022 academic year, including Anya Larson ’21 and Caesar Maldonado ’21. Fulbright scholarship recipient Anya Larson works as an English teaching assistant in the autonomous Spanish communities of the Canary Islands, off the coast of the northwest Africa. Caesar Maldonado traveling to Taiwan for his year-long adventure in the English Teaching Assistant program, which began in the fall of 2021. Additionally, two students, Zoe Perkins ’21 and Catherine Stogner ’21, were named Fulbright replacements.
The Fulbright Program was established more than 75 years ago to increase mutual understanding between the people of United States and people from other countries. Fulbright is the largest and most diverse international educational exchange program in the world. The main source of funding for the Fulbright program is an annual appropriation from the United States Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.
In related news, the Fulbright US Scholar Program has selected Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies Dr. Beth Gibbs of South Florida College as the recipient of a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award for Teaching. During the spring semester of 2022, Dr. Gibbs is working as an instructor and collaborating with conductors and their regional choirs in the north Spain.

Hollingshead, provost and vice president of academic affairs at FSC. “Such achievements demonstrate that the learning environment at South Florida empowers students and faculty to contribute to their world in positive ways, and it’s so exciting to see faculty and students living our mission as they go out and make a real difference in people’s lives. »
The first one South Florida student participated in the Fulbright program in 1949, studying political science in France. Since then, nine other senior FSC graduates or recent graduates have participated in the program, serving as cultural ambassadors in Mexico, Thailand, Taiwan, Ghana, Francethe Slovak Republic, the Netherlandsand Spain. FSC has twice been included among the US colleges and universities that have produced the most US Fulbright students: in 2018, when four of FSC’s nominees were selected, and in 2019, when three new recipients were named and that a participant from 2018 was renewed for an additional year.
Currently, a total of 11 FSC students and recent graduates have submitted applications to the Fulbright US Student Program, a record number for the College. Seven of these contestants were selected as semi-finalists. dr. Rebecca Brevardassociate professor of English, directs the Fulbright competition at South Florida College.
