FKA Twigs almost ran a carpet business instead of becoming an artist

FKA twigs is a unique artist

FKA Twigs broke into the entertainment industry when she was just a teenager. She appeared as a backup dancer in music videos for big name artists such as Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J in the early 2010s.

In 2012, twigs launched their own music career with their debut EP EP1followed by EP2 in 2013. She released her first album LP1 the following year, with the popular singles “Two Weeks” and “Video Girl”. Her genre-bending style was praised throughout the industry and she was quickly seen as an inventive new star in the industry.

Twigs released their second full album Magdalene in 2019 to critical acclaim. And in early 2022, she released her first mixtape Caprisongs.

FKA twigs almost ran a carpet business

Although she is loved for her unique take on music today, FKA twigs almost didn’t become an artist in her own right. She opened up about what her life might have been like in a February 2022 interview with NME.

Twigs reflected on her relationship with her teenage boyfriend, who she called her “all-school sweetheart.” His family came from well-to-do backgrounds and owned “the largest carpet business in Gloucestershire”.

She even admitted that she thought about settling down with him and running the carpet business herself. “There’s a lot of beauty in that, and sometimes I wish I had a family business to slip into; that would be quite comforting. But I just knew it wasn’t my destiny,” she said. “As a half-Jamaican girl, you know, we love to sing and dance, so I don’t think that could have been my destiny.”

FKA’s Twigs Considered Quitting Music Before Releasing Their “Caprisongs” Mixtape

Although she’s glad she chose to make music, she even considered giving up on her career altogether ahead of her 2022 mixtape. Caprisongs.

“During the first lockdown, I called my team suggesting that I may have reached the end of the road by making music and going all out like I have for the past few years,” said she said in an Instagram post before the project was released. “It was nice to play with the idea of not creating for the world.”

“I fell back in love with music, with danger, with trying new things, with sex, with love, with raves,” she continued. “Caprisongs is my journey to myself through my incredible collaborators and friends. It was so daunting knowing that I had to heal in front of the world I hated the idea but there was a tipping point where I knew I could get this project out and it would make me feel better and that’s really the case. ”
