Centenary Stage Company’s 2022 Women Playwrights Series Continues With “The Buddha’s Wife”

(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) — Centenary Internship Company Women Playwrights Series continues on Wednesday, April 20 with a reading of The Buddha’s Wife by Mary Poindexter McLaughlin at 7:30 p.m. at the Sitnik Theater at the Lackland Performing Arts Center at 715 Grand Avenue, Hackettstown, NJ on the campus of Centenary University. Are they so different? 2,500 years fade away as the lives of Princess Yasodhara and PhD candidate Diane Brewster seamlessly intertwine, telling a timeless story of romantic love, motherhood and waiting dreams, revealing the very real world of challenges and the choices women face through time, alongside revelations about the deeper meaning of love and friendship.

Readings in the Women Playwright series are free and donations are welcome. Advance reservations incur a $5.00 fee. For those unable to attend in person, readings from the Women Playwrights series will also be streamed live, free of charge, on the Centenary Stage Company website.

Mary Poindexter McLaughlin holds a BA in English from Stanford University, where she received the Stanford Golden Grant Award for Playwriting, and an MA in Theater and Performance Studies from SUNY Buffalo. Her play The Buddha’s Wife won the 2019 Henley Rose Playwright Competition for Women and was named a finalist in the Landing Theatre’s 2020 New American Voices Festival. Other plays have been performed in New York, Buffalo, CT, CO and PA, where she was a finalist for the Donna Award for Outstanding Playwright at the 2017 Pittsburgh New Works Festival (take your time). Poet and published essayist, (Stanford Magazine, Thrive Global) Mary co-wrote a memoir (Todd Norian’s Tantra Yoga: Journey to Unbreakable Integrity) and is currently developing his most recent play: a full-length Elizabethan epic titled His own words which answers the question, “was Shakespeare a woman?” Member: Playwrights Guild, SAG-AFTRA, Statera Arts.

Centenary Stage Company’s Women Playwrights series featured the work of over 80 emerging playwrights. The program also brought 19 plays to full series production. Led by Program Director Catherine Rust, the Women Playwrights series offers playwrights the opportunity to work with professional actors and directors in a rehearsal workshop and hear their work in front of a live audience – a essential part of the development process. Lively discussions with playwright and cast follow each presentation, and one play is selected each year as the winner of the Susan Glaspell Award and receives full production the following season on the main stage with CSC.
