5 Questions with Record Producer Chris Doss

WHITE PLAINS, NY, Aug. 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ —

1. How do you approach the sensitive task of discussing changes and rearrangements with artists?

“I usually sit down with them ahead of time to go over some pre-production issues. Here, what are your goals with the record? What records are in the same vein as what you’re aiming for? etc… From there, it really comes down to determining what sounds/instruments they are looking for. Finally, we figure out if they’re looking to make a record to tell a story or if they’re just looking to release a song into the universe and try to catch that elusive wave to fame. The latter really determines if we’re going to go for shorter verses, maybe making the record in under 3 minutes, or my least favorite…dropping a bridge section.

2. What’s the thing that every song must have to be strong?

“Ha!!! Funny enough, after a good hook I would say a bridge!! I always tell my clients that the bridge is the hook that only happens once, but it can really add a lot to a record. However, regarding the last question, sometimes it’s not on the table, so let’s go with the hook, the obvious part being the melody, followed by excellent lyrical tag.

3. What is your musical background?

“I grew up playing guitar and singing in bands. I started with pop punk, then I made the inevitable transition to shouto then metal THEN electro-pop haha. Playing was fun but touring was tough. I quickly realized that I would rather write and produce than be on the road. With the added bonus of being able to create all types of music.

4. Who is the best music producer working in the industry today?

“That’s an unpleasant question…there are so many surprising ones. Can I name a few? I’ll name a few. The Monsters & The Strangerz, Kuk Harrell, Michael Pollack, Tushar Apte, Louis Bell and Federico Vindver are my current favorites.

5. What is the first thing you listen to when listening to a new recording?

“Sound selection, voice then arrangement. Then I try to figure out what plug-ins they used to get each sound.
